Color Correction
Page 2

Can you use these techniques on an old picture that was taken with a film camera?  Of course you can.  The first trick is getting the original picture into the computer and for that you need a scanner.  I won't explain how to use your scanner.  There are too many manufacturers and the scanner usually comes with software for the purpose of scanning photos.

1998 ASCA NAtionals
Here is a picture I took at the 1998 ASCA Nationals.  My wife, Gia, is handling Lucas in the "6-9 Month" class.  Behind Gia is someone she met just before she entered the ring.  It's Jon Eckert and Cory.  A check of the catalog shows that Cory is Lucas' uncle.  They were born only one day apart.  How cool is that?
The picture was taken in very poor lighting and is slightly out of focus.  I took it from across the ring using a zoom lens and an "extender."  The picture also has a strange green shade to it caused by the type of lights used in the building.  What can I say?  It looked great in the viewfinder.  Can we salvage the picture now that we have it in the computer?  Not completely but let's see what we can do.

Turn up the lights
I'll start by using the GAMMA tool discussed on the last page.  The picture is pretty dark so we'll kick it up a few notches.  Notice how much detail is revealed.  Also notice that the LINK box is checked.  We can now see how blurry the photo really is.  We'll worry about that later.
Lucas and Cory are dark, Red Tri, males but they seem to be a little green here.

I'm seeing green
Let's take care of that green shading.  Unlink the sliders and lower the GREEN level a few notches.  Compare the picture to the one above and you can see the difference.  Now the colors are closer to reality.  The next thing to tackle is the focus.

still loading
This picture is really out of focus and it will be difficult to make perfect.  The computer can correct only so much.  Under the EFFECTS selection you will find two SHARPEN selections.  Try them both to see which looks best.  Remember that if you don't like the results just use the UNDO feature.

Better but not perfect
Here is the finished result.  It's still a bit blurred but if I tweak it any more it gets worse.  The original photo was just too out of focus.  But, this photo would still work on a web site or slide show if it wasn't enlarged any more.

contrast and compare
To get the full effect of what we did you need to see a side-by-side comparison.  This is a major improvement over all.

Let's get small
I resized the picture a little.  This smaller version can be found on Lucas' picture page.
Are you having fun yet?  This is pretty easy, huh?
