- 60th anniversary of The
Berlin Airlift
- The Airlift Memorial on
Luftbruckenplatz at Tempelhof Airport in Berlin.
Each upward reaching prong of the structure represents
one of the 3 air corridors used during the
- Berlin Airlift "Operation Vittles". The names of the British and
American Airmen who
- died in this great enterprise are
inscribed on the base of the memorial.
*
- The C-47 typifies the weary WWII aircraft which flew many
of the airlift missions.
- The bright red engine covers show courage
- and the audacious reality of airlift support to an
isolated people.
- The globe rising represents the reach of air support by
Air Power, and at a time when the Red Clouds
- of war are fading on the horizon, a new menace shows it's
ugly head, a "Cold War" of strife and rancor, .
. . people held
- by a monolithic power machine in mindless slavery and
hopelessness.
