A bit about the award...

December 1, 1999 - (from our annual Christmas newsletter we send out. Hubby wrote this part.) As most of you know, our beloved little cat, Shadow, died of cancer last December. The holidays were rough for us last year. But January brought an interesting tribute to our dearly departed feline. A friend introduced Lisa to a role-playing game on the web based on the Broadway Musical Cats. Within days, a new cat had wandered into that electronic junkyard. She was a jet-black short hair named Shadowcat. It seems the spirit of our little tomcat now lives in cyberspace.

On August 17, 1999 my friend Mistoffelees opened a Cats Choice Awards. This was open to anyone who wanted to nominiate a player for their excellent Role Playing ability and felt he/she should recieve a Role Playing Award for their character. The catagories were the cats from the musical, (i.e. Bombalurina, Grizabella, Rumpleteazer ...) but his last category was for a made-up character. Someone nominated my character Shadow, from both The Junkyard (Jemima & Bubbles' board) as well as The Jellicle Junkyard (Similyn & Shadowcat's board). [See History for an explanation of how I ended up with Shadow (same character) on two different boards.] Due to the nature of the voting, the nominees were not told who nominated them.

"Shadow is a good player, and her range of emotions run the gauntlet ... she has a very good player and a good person in RL ... One time Shadow licked the nose of a cat who had his ice-shield on, and her tongue got stuck! .. the rest of the thread was hillarious as her tongue was frostbitten... she is a fun player.."

On September 23, 1999 I wrote up a short description of my character Shadow to be used in the voting of who RPed the best Made-Up Character. The 5 characters listed in this category were: Nick-Ko-Las, Similyn, Gaelic, Shadow, and Baba.

"Shadow is a shorthair black 4yr old queen with a splash of white at her throat and green eyes that turn yellow when being mischevious. A smart cat, she comes up with solutions to problems; one of her famous hare-brained schemes that tend to get others into trouble - herself more often than not! A mother herself, she tends to mother those around her."

On October 8, 1999, in honor of CATS first opening on Broadway, Mistoffelees gave out the awards. Imagine my surprise as Shadowcat won first place! Because of the numerous nominations of this catagory, Misto also had a second place, Similyn, and a third place, Nick-Ko-Las.

The History of the Boards:

In January I RPed on Victoria the White Cat's board. [It has been so long, I forgot what server the board was originally on] There were a lot of technical problems with this board, and at the end of Febuary her board went down. Mistoffelees was nice enough to make his own board for all of us junkies on the same server; however, that server went down not too long afterwards. Bombalurina, being online at the time and in the middle of her storyline, frantically signed up for a new board and the whole group moved once again. Her board grew and flourished for some time; lots of new players signed up almost weekly. However, with the sudden outgrowth, came growth pains. The old players were missing the family-like atmosphere we had, the new players wanted so much power that one had the power "of all nature". With her problems in RL, Bombalurina wasn't able to monitor the board with much success; Similyn and I tried to create a "safe haven" as another board without offending anyone. As a direct result of this, and overwhelming responsabilities in her own life, Bombalurina permanently shut down her board. Jemima went and put up her board for all players; Similyn and I decided our board would be a private one and invited the players we felt were good players, and have tried since to keep it under control magically.

At the point where Bombalurina's board shut down, there were a discussion among the players RPing on The Jellicle Junkyard if they would be RPing on The Junkyard. My "mate" Wolfcat, decided against RPing on the other board. After some consideration, I decided to RP several possibilites and storylines that I could on her board with my character of Shadowcat without my "mate". At this point I changed Shadowcat's name to just "Shadow", to keep from getting confused with the same character on two boards. I kept Shadowcat for The Jellicle Junkyard. One storyline that I am extremely proud of from The Junkyard is Paladyr and Shadow. I would suggest reading it when you have several hours. It is long, but very good.
