About Bill Spencer and Spencer Amps

I am a BSEE (1982) and built my first fuzzbox in 1976. By the end of the 70s I was working on my own designs, and also began working with vacuum tube circuits in the mid-80s. I also have over 15 years experience in professional Digital Hardware Design, spent 4 years as a Patent Examiner, and currently repair TVs.

Why so expensive? Why so cheap? These effects are largely handbuilt (using manufactured circuit boards and enclosures) in small quantity, dictating some price penalty. On the other hand, I never had a taste for expensive effects (one's musical equipment budget can be split many ways), and mass-market alternatives (if any) are cheap. Although almost anything is possible in custom work, my standard effects are designed and priced to allow many to experience their sound. As Spencer Amps is currently in a startup phase, direct sales are used to allow small production without passing dealer markups on to you, although this may change in time.

Modifications and Repair

I have done modifications to a number of effects, amps, and guitars over the years, for example improving the bass response of the Boss SD-1. More at modz.html .

I am available for repair work of easily shipped items, or local to Richmond, VA, USA , at reasonable rates.
