Are you born again?

6 Tests for the 'Professing' Christian

by J.C. Ryle

Are you born again? This is one of life's most important questions. Jesus Christ said, "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:3).

It is not enough to reply, "I belong to the church; I suppose I'm a Christian." Thousands of nominal Christians show none of the signs of being born again which the Scriptures have given us - many listed in the First Epistle of John....

- No Habitual Sinning -

First of all, John wrote: "Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin" (1 John 3:9). "Whosoever is born of God sinneth not" (1 John 5:18).

A person who has been born again, or regenerated, does not habitually commit sin. He no longer sins with his heart and will and whole inclination. There was probably a time when he did not think about whether his actions were sinful or not, and he did not always feel grieved after doing evil.

There was no quarrel between him and sin; they were friends. But the true Christian hates sin, flees from it, fights against it, considers it his greatest plague, resents the burden of its presence, mourns when he falls under its influence, and longs to be completely delivered from it. Sin no longer pleases him, nor is it even a matter of indifference to him; it has become a horrible thing which he hates. However, he cannot eliminate its presence within him.

If he said that he had no sin, he would be lying (1 John 1:8). But he can say that he hates sin and that the great desire of his soul is not to commit sin at all. He cannot prevent bad thoughts from entering his mind, or shortcomings, omissions, and defects from appearing in both his words and his actions. He knows that "in many things we offend all" (James 3:2). But he can truly say, in the sight of God, that these things cause him grief and sorrow and that his whole nature does not consent to them.

- Believing in Christ -

Second, John wrote: "Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God" (1 John 5:1).

A man who is born again, or regenerated, believes that Jesus Christ is the only Saviour who can pardon his soul, that He is the divine person appointed by God the Father for this very purpose, and that beside Him there is no Saviour at all. In himself he sees nothing but unworthiness. But he has full confidence in Christ, and trusting in Him, he believes that his sins are all forgiven. He believes that, because he has accepted Christ's finished work and death on the cross, he is considered righteous in God's sight, and he may look forward to death and judgement without alarm.

He may have fears and doubts. He may sometimes tell you that he feels as if he had no faith at all. But ask him if he is willing to trust in anything instead of Christ, and see what he will say. Ask him if he will rest his hope of eternal life on his own goodness, his own works, his prayers, his minister, or his church, and listen to his reply.

- Practising Righteousness -

Third, John wrote: "Every one that doeth righteousness is born of him" (1 John 2:29).

The man who is born again, or regenerated, is a holy man. He endeavours to live according to God's will, to do the things that please God and to avoid the things that God hates. He wishes to continually look to Christ as his example as well as his Saviour and to prove himself to be Christ's friend by doing whatever He commands. He knows he is not perfect. He is painfully aware of his indwelling corruption. He finds an evil principle within himself that is constantly warring against grace and trying to draw him away from God. But he does not consent to it, though he cannot prevent its presence.

Though he may sometimes feel so low that he questions whether or not he is a Christian at all, he will be able to say with John Newton, "I am not what I ought to be, I am not what I hope to be in another world; but still I am not what I once used to be, and by the grace of God I am what I am."

- Loving Other Christians -

Fourth, John wrote: "We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren" (1 John 3:14).

A man who is born again has a special love for all true disciples of Christ. Like his Father in heaven, he loves all men with a great general love, but he has a special love for those who share his faith in Christ. Like his Lord and Saviour, he loves the worst of sinners and could weep over them; but he has a peculiar love for those who are believers. He is never so much at home as when he is in their company.

He feels that they are all members of the same family. They are his fellow soldiers, fighting against the same enemy. They are his fellow travellers, journeying along the same road. He understands them, and they understand him. They may be very different from himself in many ways - in rank, in station and in wealth. But that does not matter. They are his Father's sons and daughters and he cannot help loving them.

- Overcoming the World -

Fifth, John wrote: "Whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world" (1 John 5:4).

A man who is born again does not use the world's opinion as his standard of right and wrong. He does not mind going against the world's ways, ideas and customs. What men think or say no longer concerns him. He overcomes the love of the world. He finds no pleasure in things which seem to bring happiness to most people. To him they seem foolish and unworthy of an immortal being.

He loves God's praise more than man's praise. He fears offending God more than offending man. It is unimportant to him whether he is blamed or praised; his first aim is to please God.

- Keeping Oneself Pure -

Sixth, John wrote: "He that is begotten of God keepeth himself" (1 John 5:18).

A man who is born again is careful of his own soul. He tries not only to avoid sin but also to avoid everything which may lead to it. He is careful about the company he keeps. He knows that evil communications corrupt the heart and that evil is more catching than good, just as disease is more infectious than health. He is careful about the use of his time; his chief desire is to spend it profitably.

He desires to live like a soldier in an enemy country - to wear his armour continually and to be prepared for temptation. He is diligent to be a watchful, humble, prayerful man.

- The Test -

These are the six great marks of a born-again Christian.

There is a vast difference in the depth and distinctness of these marks in different people. In some they are faint and hardly noticeable. In others they are bold, plain and unmistakable, so anyone may read them. Some of these marks are more visible than others in each individual. Seldom are all equally evident in any one person.

But still, after every allowance, here we find boldly painted six marks of being born of God.

How should we react to these things? We can logically come to only one conclusion - only those who are born again have these six characteristics, and those who do not have these marks are not born again. This seems to be the conclusion to which the apostle intended us to come.

Do you have these characteristics? Are you born again?

3 Tests of a 'Born Again' Christian

by Biff

Upon ones 'New' Birth, 'All Things' become New! There has been a death to the old who once was, and a new life given to the new who now lives.

The man who is truly Born Again is made Alive IN Christ. The kingdom of God has come in a very real and powerful way! (1 Corinthians 4:20)
All things have become new to him. He's no longer the same! He neither acts or thinks the same way as he once did. How can he? God is real and alive to him now!
That's because he's been made *spiritually alive* and is put in communion with God. God is now 'real' and 'alive' as never before - and 'Personal' to him! God is not... "out there somewhere" anymore - he no longer says... "what's it all about???"... but He/God is here and now,and living in that person's new heart! (John 14:23)

Although, to look at him, one would think he's the same old Joe that he always was, except maybe he looks more peaceful around the eyes and seems to smile more now, along with a desire to tell others of his new-found freedom and joy.
But the creature who he once was: the old: his thinking, his old being, who he was, has passed away and died. He is "changed - renewed" now and given a New heart! He's no longer the same person anymore!

The *new* has come full of divine love and resurrection power and touched/changed him, and this new creation in Christ will continue to seperate himself from all his old Adamic sinful practices and habits and follow Jesus... no matter what the cost!
Because NOW he knows the truth and the truth has set him free! He is full of joy that he found out (before it was too late for him) what and who is really worth having, knowing and seeking after in this life!

If he loves God then he will, he must, continue to sever him self from all that's not joining itself to this ongoing sanctified, Christian life, including all that lacks the necessary spiritual drive and discernment associated with such a new and sanctified to the truth life.
The reigning power of death over him has been broken. The new has come to him full of resurrection power and life because 'JESUS' has come to Him and He lives! (John 14:19)

There's A new and personal hunger for and love of 'The Truth'!

The man who truly knows the truth also loves, receives and embraces all the truth. He has a real spiritual hunger for the Truth, for finding and sharing the Truth with like-minded believers as never before thought possible.
Such a man will (if he loves the Truth, and he does) continue to distance himself from all proven and known biblical error! He wants to know and feast upon ONLY the Truth now, only upon what God, and not what man, says. The reigning power of darkness over him has been broken by the light found and the nourishment given in God's Word.

He's the man who has looked the Truth squarely in the eye, weighed the cost, and came and fell before Jesus in full recognition and surrender. Now that he is [born] of the Truth he will listen to what others [born] of the Truth say (ever in context with God's Word) as well! (Jn.8:47; 1 Jn.4:6)

We no longer 'Fear The Judgement' knowing that we have found Peace with God!

The man who has been made free in Christ (1 John 5:12), is the one who is dead to the law (Gal.5:18). (and the law deals with judgement!) He has no earthly ties to weigh him down anymore, and tie his hands and vie for all of his attention. He has severed them and given them to the Lord, and the Lord has given them back to him in their right place and setting, with Him as the Head of all!!!
He knows his place, his duty, his responsibilty and the difference between right (good) and wrong (evil)! He needs none to tell him these things! He is "Spirit" taught, and the word confirms this.

(He has also given and placed his loved ones in Christ's hands for His keeping in the same way, emptying himself. In the exchange he is now made able to love them with a true and sanctified love, "unselfishly", the way Christ loved the church.) (Eph.5:25; Mt.19:29.)

The reigning power of sin over him is broken! He has opened the door of his heart to full capacity and the Lord of Glory has been warmly invited to come in and have His rightful, center place in and over him as his Sovereign King and Lord. (Rev.3:20)

YE MUST BE BORN AGAIN!

What specifically happens the moment one becomes a bonafide "born-again Christian"???...

1. They have an immediate CHANGE of heart towards God and His word!

The persons "Perception" has completely changed! They no longer see things the way they once did. They no longer see things through the light (i.e. darkness) that was in them (Matthew 6:23) but in a whole new light (John 8:12; 12:46), in a whole new way of understanding things, in "the Light of Christ" (2 Corinthians 4:6).

This means that they no longer fear the loss of some imaginary heaven invented in their own mind nor dread the pains of a very real hell after their life here is over. They no longer "see" God as some figament of their imagination existing "out there somewhere" and very aloof, as invented by their religious fantasies and myths.

In an instant they have come to see Him as real and alive in the most personal and intimate of ways, full of love for them, thanks to their reception of the Holy Spirit who has revealed God to them!

They have SEEN and TOUCHED Him high and lifted up... and live to tell about it. They now know beyond a fact that He loves them and loves them so much - as they realize how He chose to suffer and go to the cross "for them" - that they cannot comprehend such love as this. It is beyond them!
They are UTTERLY STUNNED by this revelation... a revelation so powerful as to not only save them who were beyond saving but love them and make them part of His family as well. It's all too much! Let the tears and the breakdowns and the uncontained joy begin!

In just one day - in one hour - in an instant - in the twinkling of an eye - the person has gone from darkness to light... from death to life... from pretending to real... from the most fearing to the most loving... from cursing his name in hatred to praising Him with joy. He has now become the sole source, center and love of their life!
They now must share and witness Him to others so that they too may know Him and the joy it is to have and to hold Him for themselves, forever.

2. They have an immediate CHANGE of heart towards others, especially towards those who had been disliked and who had caused them hurt and grief in the past!

Again, all of this goes to prove and mean that they are no longer the same as they once were. They no longer think the same - nor act the same - nor retaliate the same as they once did (Luke 6:46).

Those old, hateful (i.e. "evil") thoughts they once held towards others to wish them harm will instead (ever with God's help) turn into thoughts of good. Where hate and/or vengeful type thoughts entered in and were entertained before, these are now replaced by thoughts of love and good will towards ALL the persons, including and especially to those whom they once hated and/or wished were dead (for whatever excuse or reason).

This all begins through our Hearing Him speak the Gospel/word of God to us personally. This is the resurrection POWER and LIFE that is actually contained in His word that the Spirit of God takes and sows directly into our hearts!
For this to happen one must first be made "ALIVE" inside. Until then, until we hear God speaking to us, we are all DEAD! Upon ones "New Spiritual Birth" there is an actual, inward "Change" that takes place - a "Repentance" - a "Complete Turnaround" that occurs the moment one becomes "born again"!

Where as they were once addicted to talking about people behind their backs, or stealing a few dollars here and there, etc., we see that the addiction (that led them to sin continuosly) has now been lifted off them, cold turkey, which in turn causes them to no longer want to talk about people and/or no longer want to steal, etc.
There is a new "Power" in them now; a new "LIFE" in them now, able to live the Christian life the way that God intended it to be. This "Power" is who Scriptures call: "Christ" - "Christ in You", who goes to prove that they have been saved TO God, as well as saved From their sins.

3. They have an immediate CHANGE of heart towards themselves, as well. They no longer are the same, thus no longer think the same either!

That part of themselves that they had always deemed somewhat worthy and tried to clean up and polish for "God's sake" (thus for theirs as well) is now... DEAD!!! (Galatians 2:20)

They now know and believe that God (through His Son) not only paid a sin-debt for them that they could never pay, BUT He also saved them "TO" God (i.e. He sanctified them to the Truth) as well.

This means that not only has He forgiven their sins, but that He has also empowered them (by the revelation of Him that they received) to live unto Him, and... "IF" they in turn Love Him: To DO as He says and "KEEP" His words.

What God has done is to take and Crucify them, and bury them with Christ.
What this does is do away with the OLD man: the Adamic sin-nature we were born with that got us into all this trouble with God in the first place, and our trying to shine it up all the time through our "good works, etc.", in defiance, rather than hear, believe, come and obey Him... letting the real and unselfish "Good Works" flow from such a fellowship and relationship.

The new birth in Christ brings with it the Peace that surpasses all human (i.e. born once: sin-natured: darkened) understanding, and is Completely at Rest in Him through the saving/changing knowledge of His resurrection and His work on the cross.

This "New Creation In Christ" is totally unlike the rest of the world, and being "In Christ" is kept hidden from view!
Athough "Outwardly"; to the human eye, these "Born again Christians" seem the same as the rest of the world, yet the "Inward" person has been completely renewed and is no longer of this world, even though they may be walking through it a while longer yet.

Now what's on their heart and lips is their wish that everyone (family, friends and enemies as well) would come to know Him and the great miracle and wonder making power it is, and to know how indescribably wonderful He really is to those who know him now.

For this testimony of theirs they are more than willing to be laughed at, misunderstood and scorned, for such is the POWER that has changed them! They know what it's like to be in darkness as they once were! They know what it's like to be shunned and ignored for being... "Different". But... they also know that people need to know Him NOW BEFORE they die and BEFORE it's too late. They know - they remember - they speak the Truth in Love!".***
