1 Corinthians 13:13 - "And now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love."
These three! Look again at the things that will cease and pass away....
So if faith, hope and love are the only things that abide and remain then they must be scrutinized further - especially Love!
1 Corinthians 13:8 Love never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
We know that WITHOUT FAITH no one can be saved! It is written -
Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God - Romans 10:17..
In reading verse 16 we read -
Romans 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
(We are able to grasp the meaning of verse 17 by reading verse 16.)
The key here is "Obeying" the Gospel - "Obeying" what they heard the Spirit telling them! Although these (of Rom. 10:16) heard, it didn't do them any good. Why? Because they didn't obey it! Even though they heard it being spoken to them they didn't HEAR it where it counts: through their obedience to it. So, what good is any of their understanding and knowledge and faith when it comes right down to the bottom line - "Obeying the Gospel". (We obey it because we Love the Author of it, thus we keep/obey His words.)
All the believing (faith) in the world won't save you if you're not going to obey the Gospel. How does Love come in here? Well "IF" you really do love the Lord then you really will obey the Gospel too. Otherwise, even if -
I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing 1 Corinthians 13:2.
James says it like this -
Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone James 2:17.
What is clearly being said here is that if yours is the kind of faith that doesn't do anything, then it abides alone.
Again, look at what the author of Hebrews has to say about Jesus -
Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Jesus Loved thus Obeyed the Father. His faith did not abide alone! Without Love the cross could not have been endured. We too are told to consider Him -
Hebrews 12:3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
So what we've learned here is that a faith which acts alone or on its own is no faith at all. What we need is Faith with a Heart - by putting some meat on its bones - the kind of faith that doesn't act alone apart from love. Having Faith in God is like having a fruitless tree, it being alone. Hebrews 12:3 reminds us that we will grow weary of following Jesus and faint along the way, unless we add Love to our faith. With faith working in conjunction with love; when adversity hits, we will mount up with wings as eagles, and no amount of weariness or obstacles can stand in the way of such faith.
Romans 8:23-24 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.
For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?
Our blessed hope is tied up in this one single event: "The coming of our Lord Jesus Christ". Look at "faith"! What good is "Faith" to anyone who possesses a Christ who never rose from the dead? Yet there are many who are like this today -
1 Corinthians 15:14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
Faith is valid ONLY because Christ has risen from the dead! Likewise Hope! Hope is valid ONLY because Jesus is coming back to glorify us and take us to Himself when He appears - Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
Faith has to do with His death and resurrection, just as Hope has to do with His second coming. Bluntly speaking, if Christ hadn't died in order to forgive us of our sins - AND - if He hadn't risen from the dead and sent forth the Spirit - AND - if He doesn't return in power and glory and give us new bodies -- then our Faith is in Vain - our Love is in vain - and our Hope is in vain as well.
Romans 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
A true Christian has this ANCHOR attached to his soul, called - "HOPE"! He knows for certain, by the power of the Holy Spirit, that his redeemer lives, and someday soon he will see Him in Person as well. When this blessed event occurs is when he will receive a new and spiritual body. This anchor is like a rock! He can't be moved away from this vision! The revelation of Jesus Christ to his inner man is more real and alive than anything else could ever be, causing him to be filled with confidence and filled with Joy and Hope -
Romans 8:1-2 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
The Spiritual Man no longer walks after the flesh thereby serving his old masters of sin and death, but serves God in the newness of the Spirit! When He appears a second time he knows that he will get a new body, one that will never die again! So Christ not only overcame sin but He overcame the last enemy, death, for us as well. We have this Hope and Peace the moment that the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts. This is a real and Living Hope that only knowing God in His Love, Grace and Mercy can give!
Here we have the greatest motivator of all. Love gives proof of ones faith: "I will show thee my faith by my works" James 2:18.
The ONLY way for Christ to despise all the outward shame connected with His going to the cross and for all the inward joy that was set before Him to endure it was because He loved thus obeyed the Father above all, and because He loved us as well. Without this unselfish LOVE then everything that Jesus did for the Father and us would have been under the Letter of the Law (and the Letter only kills - 2 Corinthians 3:6) - but there was LOVE, Great Love, so much so that He; by His own free choice, ("Not As I Will, Father, But As Thou Wilt" - Matthew 26:39-44) He willingly laid down His life as the only means of saving us -
Matthew 26:42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.
John 15:13-14 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
The key here to no Greater Love than this is: "Thy will be done!" It is because He abided in and continued to walk in the greatest Power of them all - "LOVE" (1 John 4:16) - that He was able to endure the cross while despising the shame, to the very end. What Love! Laying down His life in order to save His friends. Not only that but -
Jesus asks all of His friends IF THEY LOVE HIM, in return? - and IF they do then Prove it by keeping His words (just as He kept His father's words) -
John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
Luke 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? (Read the rest of the chapter)
"Hope, Faith, Love - these three!" There is no greater motivator than love! The Faith to believe comes upon hearing the word. The ability to even hear it comes from the word itself. The Hope of His coming is given when the love of God is poured out in our hearts. So then both Faith and Hope are the things that God gives to us in order to believe and to hope.
However, "LOVE" is what WE do IF we love God! Love is not just something that God gives to us, but in returning it to Him it becomes something that we give back to God daily -
1 John 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us.
Are we willing to be unlike the world??? The question we must ask is this one: "Do we love Him enough to do as He says??? (for instance) -
Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Matthew 16:24
No amount of faith or hope (if they are without Love) can do it! This is a call to COME! And in order to come to Him we will have to sell all that we own to do so (IF - we love Him). This is Love, a full grown love, a love He expects every one of us to have and to show.
Those who have been given much (Love) are expected to return that Love (Generously) in the only way it can be returned - through obedience because of Love. This is NOT the kind of obedience that has its base in the Law, but in one that is full of Grace and Truth! Those who've been given only little (because their commitment to Him is little and shallow) had better pause and re-evaluate, rather than fall short of the full revelation and lose what little they had -
Revelation 2:4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.
As Paul says, "Love is the Greatest of them all!" Even though we may have so great a Faith as to remove mountains (1 Corinthians 13:2) or entertain the Hope of seeing Him and being in the resurrection, yet if we aren't deeply rooted in love, then what we do have is little indeed! If we aren't going to cherish, honor and obey the word of God, then we have nothing! LOVE, One on One LOVE, the kind that hears and obeys God from the heart, will stand the test of time, forever -
Ephesians 3:17-19 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
May God bless you in the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ!
