Upon one man's coming to the Lord, he then allowed himself to be influenced by aberrant beliefs and teachings, actually learning the way that his teachers taught him in order to invent and name what just wasn't there in the Scriptures.
The other man also allowed himself to come under the influence of aberrant treachings as well for a while, the difference being that his "vision" of God was greater and clearer than the first man, and involved a much deeper and holier committment than the first.
The first man thought little or nothing of adding to or taking away from God's word, after all he believed that he was "Rightly Dividing it" the way he was taught to do it so that it would end up fitting into what he believed.
The other man understood the fear of God and the Holiness of His word, and that it was nothing to play around with but revere and simply abide in without changing it to make it fit some man-made doctrine.
The two men got into a "discussion" over one doctrine or another, and before you knew it they were both unable to agree on anything in that discussion.
What needs to be seen is this:
We have - "Two men" -and- "Two beliefs".
Both of these beliefs didn't originate with God.
There is only One Doctrine and that is the one that needs no help to interpret it!
The important thing to see is that the first man actually played god (sat as a lord) over the word of God, taking and moving it here and there to fit his good pleasure without fear.
The other man knew enough to take off his shoes before the word, neither moving nor reading nothing into the word that wasn't already there in black and white. He "heard it" like God gave it here and elsewhere!
Two men - two beliefs - two ways of going about establishing doctrine.
Thus we see the "rift and the difference" between these two men caused by their different beliefs... and "why".
This man called it "Rightly Dividing the word" by filling in the meanings (but only as according to his aberrant beliefs) in tune with the doctrine he was taught.
The first taking and "re-making" it to line up with his belief, contrary to the rest of Scripture!
The second simply receiving and believing it as is, agreeing with all the rest of Scripture!
