Sitting down and weighing the costs

Does it cost us anything to be a Christian and follow Jesus?

To determine that, we must know for certain in our hearts whether or not HE ALONE is worthy of our all!?
What tips the scale is our receiving the revelation of Him alive and well, and seated upon the throne of Glory. Only this revelation will kindle in us the same kind of Flaming Love that was in Jesus (John 2:17) and is on fire for God and doing God's will as we wholly submit ourselves to Him.

Luke 11:2 - And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth, as it is done in heaven.

Consider the man, Jesus Christ (Hebrews 12:1-3). This is the same person who for the joy that was set before him (i.e. the joy of doing God's will) endured the cross, while despising the shame. Yet this same person sweat blood in the Garden (Luke 22:44) and was in agony knowing what he was about to do and that it was God's will for him to suffer and die by going to the cross like a common criminal, as the payment for our sins. The Word became flesh to do just this! Note his struggle and joy and love and the agony of his soul because of you and I and of doing the will of God....

Matthew 26:39 - And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

Matthew 26:42 - He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

Matthew 26:44 - And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

This same Jesus who was crucified is now alive forevermore and is seated at the right hand of Power, and will reveal Himself by sending the Holy Spirit to those who seek Him with all their heart...

John 14:23 - If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

John 8:31 - Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, IF ye continue in my word, THEN are ye my disciples indeed;
32 - And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Take special note of the word, IF and what that makes us IF we obey him: His disciple! Remember also that this was spoken only to those which believed on Him!
Doing God's will, and Keeping His words amount to the same thing! We see how Jesus did the Father's will and it cost him his very own life. Afterwards, he became raised to new life and glorified. We must all be born again; born into God's family through the kind of faith that believes and loves our Lord's every word, and thus one that receives the Holy Spirit; who in turn raises us up to new life in Christ, whereby we become empowered to obey God's voice.

Make absolutely no mistake about it, Jesus says that there's a price to pay in becoming one of His disciples. This price can be clearly seen in many Biblical examples. One of those examples is seen through the actions of ones own unbelieving family members when they're confronted with the truth.
Listen to what Jesus says....

Luke 12:51 - Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:
52 - For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.
53 - The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

Matthew 10:34 - Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
35 - For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
36 - And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.
37 - He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
38 - And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
39 - He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

Luke 14:26 - If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
27 - And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
28 - For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?
33 - So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

Take special note of verse 28! Read it again...
For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?
Verse 28. That is the verse we are going to consider here.

Nothing can hurt more than having your own loved ones disown you because you Love the truth above all, and have done God's will in order to keep His Holy Word intact by addressing them with it. Every Christian is commanded to live righteously (Titus 2:11-15), and that means that there's certain times when a Christian cannot bear to just sit by and quietly tolerate their family's unrighteously living in sin ; especially if it's a grievous sin, against God's Holy Word. They will have to speak out against what their loved ones are doing IF they love them and IF they Love Jesus, being prompted to speak out to them by the Holy Spirit! This is NOT a Silent witness to The Truth that I speak of, but a Verbal one. One that speaks loud and clear in God's behalf!

This Warning occurs when we are confronted by a friend or family member who's living in sin and acts like it means little or nothing to them, as they hear what God has to say to them about it, by His Spirit, through our mouth. If we love them MORE than we love Him - [meaning: If we're afraid to tell them the truth (not just the Gospel but the whole truth, which includes having them weigh the costs)] - then we're unfit for the kingdom of God.

This holy/unholy friction that exists (in the spiritual realm - Ephesisans 6:11-13) between unbelieving family members and the true Christian, manifests itself into the physical realm whenever we seek to win God's heart, and bring the truth to bear against this easily intreated sin of theirs (Mark 13:11). We do so because....
A. We love Him and seek to do what He says above all (Thus abiding in Christ's first commandment - Matthew 22:37-38), and,
B. We are compelled to tell them because we love them and are concerned for the eternal well-being of their souls (as we abide in Christ's second commandment as well - Matthew 22:39).

Simply by our being born again and becoming true Christians, has established a chasm between us, one that never existed before whenever we spoke of anything else but Christ. This division that exists between us is now recognized as such simply because we opened our mouths and spoke our Jesus to them.

Matthew 5:13-16 says that we are called to be the salt of the earth, but if the salt loses it savor (because we are afraid of speaking the truth to our loved ones), then what good are we, except to be tossed out and trodden on?? We are called to be the light to the world as well, but what good is any light if it's kept hidden (because of our fearing to be associated with Christ) under a bushel instead of shining before men??

To be a follower/disciple of Christ not only means believing with the heart that God raised Him from the dead, but also means that we are to confess Him with our mouth before men as well (Romans 10:9-10). We are to be "His" witnesses by speaking forth The Truth to those we love (and this is going to cost us).
Persecution follows our doing God's will, and it is the price (of losing unbelieving friends and family members) that one must pay in this world, simply because we Love the truth and love to bathe in it every day, while they avoid it like the plague and can't bear to be around it (Hebrews 12:25). Yet we know it's their only hope!

What good is it if we only love those who love us and hail them as our family (Matthew 5:46-47)? So what?? Yet if we remain afraid to speak out and say nothing to them; in order to remain friendly with the world, so that our family member can go on excusing sin, then what good does our being quiet about it cost us if we allow such quietness (Matthew 10:32-33) to rob us out of our inheritance and we both end up in hell??

Jesus clearly makes it known that if our love for others, for ourselves, or for our posessions is Greater than our love for Him, then don't bother coming after Him at all (Luke 14:26-27; 33). He is saying this loud and clear! Never forget that we, Christians, are in a race to win the prize and be crowned with glory (1 Cor. 9:24). Thy will be done, is the only way to win it.

To somehow even think that we can be saved without our obeying Him (by repenting of sin) and yielding to Him and His word in love, is nothing more than a bunch of worldly hogwash invented by the very same people who refuse to consider the costs of what it really means to become a disciple/follower of Jesus Christ.
For instance, read

Luke 9:57-62....
And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

There are other examples to look at as well (Matthew 4:18-20, 9:9). Suffice it to say that when Jesus calls us to follow Him, then we had best drop everything and go! Remember Lot's wife (Luke 17:31-32)??

For another example of what I've been saying, let's take a look at all those who are represented by the Shallow Soil and the Weedy Soil in the Parable Of The Sower. (Please read Matthew 13:3-9 and verses 18-23....)

As you can see, these all started out being disciples of Christ (i.e. Christians), just like those who are represented by the Good Soil as well. These too began by walking and following hard after the Spirit of Truth, who was revealing to them the way of Christ and the way they too must go.
The Spirit shows each individual believer; in a personal way, the way in which they first must go Down (with Christ) before they can go Up with Him (in Victory)! (There is no getting around this!!)

However, because of the very word they at first believed and received with joy into their heart (Matthew 13:20), they soon found trouble confronting them along the way. In receiving a Costless (and therefore, a False and Partial) Gospel, they never sat down to consider the costs of what it would mean to obey God and follow Jesus. They thought it was all just a cake-walk and that it would cost them nothing of any real importance to follow Jesus.
It was because of this False or Partial Gospel they had received that they now began to be offended (Matthew 13:21). They became easily offended because they did not hold fast to the full counsel of God (i.e. to ALL that God said), as persecution and even death for the truth began to rear its ugly head against them along the way.

Then those represented by the Shallow Ground soon found out that they didn't take the word of God seriously and did not have the depth of love and endurance necessary to hold on to the faith. So when persecution hit them they became offended, shriveled up and fell out of the way. When they fell they were gathered up by and flocked around teachers who believed the same false doctrine they believed in (i.e. the easy-believism gospel), in order to have their ears constantly tickled by them (2 Timothy 4:3-4).

Those represented by the Weedy Ground will soon become mesmerized all over again by the return of the growing weeds that represent the cares of this life and the deceit of getting rich (because they never got rid of them by coming before the cross and laying them all down there; along with themselves). This caused the vision of sugar plums to once again arise and dance in their heads and effectively replace and choke off the word by leading them away to its promises (1 John 2:15-17).

God is fair in testing all who profess faith in Him. He does so in order for us to know if we have what it takes (through His Spirit) to go All The Way with His Son to the cross or not?? He does this whenever we are being troubled or persecuted for the faith and calls us to come to Him in order to see if we will go all the way with Him and endure it to the end. Or He may call us in order to see if the cares of this life and the deceit of riches will materialize again and entice us and draw us away? (Matthew 22:14)

All who leave The Narrow Way (i.e. who stop walking after the Spirit) in order to follow what they believe is a Safer, Wider and Easier path to glory, do so because they were unwilling to pay the price. They didn't trust what they thought Christ was saying to them concerning their peace and safety, and so they became offended (Matthew 13:21) at being thrown to the wolves (so to speak) for the word of God!
"They" are the ones who made the decision to believe Him by adhearing to an easy believism gospel, and "they" will also be the ones who make the decision to desert him as well (by gathering around teachers who tell them what they want to hear), whenever the going gets too tough and too demanding. (John 6:44)

The shallow (or rocky) ground in the parable is representative of all the Lazy, Shallow-Minded people in the world, while the soil that again sprouted weeds in it (i.e. the weedy soil) represents all of the Busy, Worldly-Minded people, and even though the parable shows them (at first) receiving the word with joy, neither one sat down long enough at the Masters feet in order to learn of Him, or of counting the costs involved in becoming His disciple! That is why the word got choked-off (i.e. died) in them. (2 Peter 2:20-22)

The day they became unwilling to pay the price of laying it all down by going all the way to win Christ (and this was after many promptings by the Holy Spirit to do just that), was the same day that they exchanged the truth of God for a lie (Romans 1:25). When the Lord comes and says: Follow Me, we better make sure we're ready to go.

These could not bear to live the truth by having their good names and reputations smeared in the mud. They could not bear to be associated with the Biblical Jesus, nor lose it all for His sake, because to them he just wasn't worth it. They could not bear to have their loved ones reject them, so they chose to see little sense in either them or of their loved ones having to give up and/or approve of life-styles that dis-honor and are out to shame God.

Titus 1:16 - They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

These have effectively choked-off the word, and yet they somehow believe themselves to be - Christians, with no thought at all of having to do God's will... and of doing it, DAILY. (2 Thessalonians 2:10-12)
To them being a Christian is only an expression of outward love, love, love, while tolerating (which is simply their way of approving) sin, rather than doing His will and holding fast to His words.
However, doing God's will is something that is full of His love and truth, and yet deeply personal and many times very heart-wrenching as death (Rev.10:9).

The purpose of God in sending us His Son was to pay a debt we couldn't pay! We are saved by Grace, meaning that it cost God the Father everything He held dear to Him (i.e. His only begotten Son) by sending Him to die as payment for us. At the same time it cost the Son everthing he had as well (i.e. his very own life). That WORK He did to save us, cost us absolutely nothing! That is Grace -- and it is finished!
HOWEVER - In order for us to go and appropriate His Grace; this FREE GIFT He gave to us, WE are the ones who first must: Repent of our sins and Believe on the Son (many scriptures)... which in turn opens for us the narrow gate!

The bottom line in all of this is to respond and keep on responding to following the Spirit of Truth's promptings and wooings until we are brought to the end of ourselves as well (i.e. brought to the foot of the cross). There (at the foot of the cross) we will catch a glimpse of our own horrendously evil Sin-Nature; become absolutely abhored by this sight, and agree right then and there with God that we (our Old-Uncrucified-Man) need to be put to death (i.e. Crucified) with Christ.

As we recognize who we are, what we have, and what we are without Christ, is when we; our OLD Sinning Man, is taken and put to death with Christ. It is at this time that scriptures as John 14:21 become real and alive in us as we experience for ourselves the awesome and melting love of God being poured out into our New Hearts (nearly bursting them) as we become New Creations IN Christ. It is at this time when ALL things become Brand-New!... (because we're seeing everything through His heart, for the very first time.) Read 1 Corinthians 2:9-16

- IN CONCLUSION -

Acts 2:36 - Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, BOTH Lord and Christ.

Therefore, if we say that we are going to Believe on the Son (who has been crowned 'Lord Of All'), then WE will do as HE says (Luke 6:46; Mark 9:7). WE will do this (with His help) -- Thy will be done, on earth...
and through faith WE will Repent of (i.e. turn away from) our sins (becoming justified in the eyes of God)... as we Turn to the Lord Jesus Christ and are loved and saved, by being bathed with the Holy Spirit and made Holy through His word (sanctifying us to/making us one with the truth - John 17:17) -- and this is all His doing -- ...as it is done, in heaven!!

Believing on Him, therefore, will cost us (i.e. cost our sinful nature = our Old Man) everything we own (Luke 18:22; 1 John 3:16). This is the way of the cross!!!

John 12:24 - Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
25 - He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

Mark 8:34 - And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
35 - For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.

If we say we love Him - if He means more to us than life itself - then we will deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him...

Philippians 3:7 - But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
8 - Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

Is He worthy?? YEA - or - NAY?!

May God bless you in the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ!
